Gartner flies to Australian GT Trophy pole at Wakefield

Richard Gatner will start from pole position in Race 1 for the Australian GT Trophy Series at Wakefield Park after setting the fastest time in Qualifying aboard his Lamborghini.

Gartner’s 0:58.495 came in the second qualifying session to put him 0.1s clear of Steve McLaughlan and Rod Salmon respectively, while Rio Nugara rounded out the trio of Audis in fourth.

The Ferrari 458 of Wayne Mack locked out fifth spot ahead of Challenge class pole winner Mark Griffith in his Ferrari 430.

Part 1 of qualifying got underway in tricky conditions as light rain started to fall around the Goulburn venue making the track surface slippery.

Travers Beynon fell victim to the treacherous conditions in the dire stages of Qualifying 1, when he backed his Audi into the tyre barrier at the Fish Hook, causing slight cosmetic damage to the rear end of the R8.

This brought out a red flag as the track began to dry out, which left Gartner at the top on a 0:59.4s as the clocked ticked down to zero and the session was not restarted.

In Qualifying 2, Gartner again shot to the top early on and was the first man to dip into the 58s on his sixth lap in the session, which was completely dry.

The leaderboard stayed much the same throughout, until McLaughlan moved ahead of title rival Salmon on his last lap to put the former’s Audi on the front row of the grid.

Race 1 starts at 9:15am AEDT on Sunday.
