Supercars 2018 calendar locked in

The 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship calendar has been revealed, spanning over 16 events and including a night race.

The full season will be held over 38-weeks, starting and finishing on street circuits, with the annual season opener at the Adelaide 500 from March 1-4, and ending in Newcastle for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 from November 23-25.

2018 will see an expanded schedule with the inclusion of the brand new Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia, as well as the addition of a championship round at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.

Next years calendar will also include the Red Rooster Sydney Super Night 300 at Sydney Motorsport Park on August 4, which will be the first time the series has raced under lights on Australian soil since Calder Park in 1997.

The race will be 300km in length, starting under the lights at 7pm and concluding at approximately 10pm.

Other confirmations have been the continuation of the Auckland Super Sprint in New Zealand with a November slot, and the avoidance of clashing between the Gold Coast 600 and the MotoGP Australian Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, the Newcastle 500 will held the week after Rally Australia.

“We have added two new feature events in the Australian Grand Prix and Tailem Bend while improving our continuity and momentum through the season,” said Supercars CEO James Warburton.

“Competing for Championship points for the first time at the Australian Grand Prix has been a long-term goal for our sport and we are honoured to be able to do so on such an international stage.

“Tailem Bend will be a premier motor racing circuit in Australasia and one we are delighted to be making our debut at in August, as part of an initial a four-year deal.”

The Dunlop Super2 Series wildcard program will also continue in 2018, with the teams eligible to compete in the Winton, Darwin, Ipswich and The Bend Motorsport Park SuperSprint rounds.

The championship itself is set for a seven event schedule in 2018, with Bathurst returning as a points paying event, as well as a trip to Perth in May.

The season starts in March at Adelaide, following onto Tasmania, Perth, Townsville, Sandown and Bathurst, before concluding in November at Newcastle.
